Now that I have time on my hands, I have been making plans to create. Looking on the bright side of California’s coronavirus lockdown, I ask myself – How many times have I longed for more time to sew?
And besides, sewing is a great way to control anxiety. There is something about the hum of the sewing machine and the calm of a mind occupied with a creative endeavor. And, I
Yesterday marked one month since I informed my husband we were on a self-imposed lockdown. My number one priority was and is keeping my family healthy. My husband has Type One Diabetes and thus a compromised immune system. Despite the fact that we are relatively young and healthy, we really don’t want to let the coronavirus into our house.
We spend all of our hours at home, working, cooking, distance learning, playing music, soaking up mountain sunshine, and prioritizing creativity for all of us.
My current projects include sewing a dress, sewing masks for organizations that need them, and learning to bake sourdough bread. Have you seen the bread shelf at the grocery store lately?! It’s a good time to learn.
(I purchased a detailed sourdough recipe from @thewonkyplan on Instagram.)
Before entering lockdown, I made a trip to the post office to pick up this gorgeous copy of the International Vogue Pattern Book from Winter 1970/1971.
Despite having so much more time to sew, I have been in dire need of inspiration. Luckily, this magazine has inspiration in droves. Not only does it show several patterns I’ve been longing to try, but the set styling is my interior design dream.
I am, by no means, a minimalist. I adore ornate Victorian Bohemianism with plenty of greenery and nature. The set for this photo shoot makes me long to shop for our new home.
(For now, we are putting off our move to Portland while we weather this public emergency along with everyone else.)
During these hard times, I hope these images add some beauty to your life. I’ve added a link to each pattern, when available.

I hope these images have provided you with some inspiration. Most of all, I hope that you, your family, and your friends are healthy and weathering this storm with calm and creativity. Sending LOVE from my family to you and yours.
Please, comment below and let me know what you are doing to stay sane while indoors.

Just followed my nose over here from Instagram. Love your post! I was born in 1971 so these images are especially fun for me. I’m currently cutting out a 1976 overall jumper while my husband and college kids make the first run in 15 days to the grocery. We’re living as locked-down as possible because my husband is a radiologist and while not on the front lines, is seriously freaked out by what he’s seeing. Glad you and yours are tucked in. Take care and happy sewing!
I am so happy to hear from a fellow sewist who’s enjoying being creative during this crazy time. I would love to see a picture of your finished overall jumper when you are ready to show it off! Please mention me on Instagram if you post a picture. Initially, I felt a little paranoid when we decided to practice social-distancing before it was a common thing, but the more I see, the more I suspect we are all right to be worried. I hope we can all make the best of our time at home with our families. Sending love and wishes that you and your family stay healthy through this tough time. Thanks for stopping by and hope to see you back here soon!
